Director, BIDMC Academy
The Shapiro Institute Center for Education seeks a Director of the BIDMC Academy. The BIDMC Academy is a hospital-based community committed to enhancing and fostering the academic development of healthcare professionals throughout the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center community by:
• Convening a community of practice among faculty, advanced physician trainees (senior residents, fellows), and other healthcare professionals (e.g., nurses, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, etc.) dedicated to professional excellence as clinicians and educators,
• Providing seminars and resources relevant to healthcare professionals working in academic medicine,
• Upholding the teaching and curriculum development skills of active teachers and educators.
While all faculty are welcome to join the Academy, there is a focus on those pursuing career paths as medical educators and/or clinicians who do significant bedside and/or classroom teaching for students, residents and fellows.
The specific responsibilities of this position, which receives salary support for 0.15 FTE, include (but are not limited to):
• Design and implement an innovative semimonthly seminar series that addresses the evolving educational needs of healthcare professionals within the BIDMC community (20-25 seminars per year).
• Identify and invite speakers to contribute to the academy’s educational offerings, ensuring a diverse range of expertise and perspectives.
• Collaborate with hospital and educational leaders to further the health systems mission and goals and address specific needs of faculty and learners in the BIDMC community.
• Offer guidance and support to healthcare professionals, fostering their academic growth and professional development within the institution by coordinating peer observations of teaching to enhance teaching quality and provide one-on-one consultations for curriculum vitae development.
• Advance the visibility and quality of professional development opportunities of the Shapiro Institute by meeting with key educational leaders across departments, participating in recruitment of prospective Academy members, disseminating opportunities, and coordinating the bimonthly newsletter, the BIDMC Academy PRESS.
• Participating with VP for Education, faculty and staff in Center for Education in development, implementation and assessment of faculty development programs.
Qualifications:
• MD with extended training in medical education or Masters’ or PhD in an education-related field
• 5 years’ experience in medical education, with an emphasis on faculty development
• Academic rank at Assistant Professor level at HMS or above (Associate Professor or above preferred)
• Extensive knowledge of educational principles, evidence-based practice, and key literature in medical education
• Fluent in contemporary issues in academic medicine
• Facility with HMS promotions process
• Track record of leadership, distinction as a teacher, and scholarly productivity in medical education
