Anesthesia Simulations

Resident Simulation Sessions

We combine state of the art mannequins, trained confederates and actors, special effects, and real equipment to allow learners to be fully immersed in medical scenarios. We are able to control all physiologic changes to the mannequins with a high degree of accuracy. This includes changes to vital signs on the monitor, lung and heart sounds, as well as physical changes to the mannequin appearance. This capability allows faculty to recreate whole body medical scenarios that are either seen frequently, or rarely, in the operating room under safe conditions. Each scenario is captured on video allowing our instructors to run both group and individual debrief sessions for our learners.

Lior Levy, MD and Andrey Rakalin, MD are in charge of our Anesthesia resident simulation programs and use all of these elements to train our learners. Our learners may need to manage multiple simulations running concurrently or they may use the center to perfect a procedure or case that they want to improve in. The center and its staff adapt to their needs to make it a safe place to teach and learn.

Procedure Training

The simulation center is not limited to whole body simulations. We have several trainers from basic venous arms to immersive virtual reality trainers all designed to let a learner safely practice their skills.

Central Line Training

Lifelike partial task trainers provided in the simulation and skills center at BIDMC are utilized to train the anesthesia residents in proper technique used in central venous catheter insertion. A didactic session is followed by a hands on, one on one session with an experienced instructor. Training is focused on proper sterile technique, anatomical landmark identification, and proper insertion technique. Ultrasound use in central venous line insertion is also covered during each session.

Arterial and Venous Line Insertion

Arterial line and venous line partial task trainers are provided to our learners allowing them to learn proper sterile technique and insertion skills.
