Calls for Letters of Intent for BIDMC Academy
The Academy at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is soliciting Letters of Intent for Prospective Membership for 2024-2025.
Mission Statement and Goals
The mission of the BIDMC Academy is to enhance and foster the academic development of healthcare professionals throughout the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center community by:
• Convening a community of practice among faculty, advanced physician trainees (senior residents, fellows), and other healthcare professionals dedicated to professional excellence as clinicians and educators
• Providing seminars and resources relevant to healthcare professionals working in
academic medicine
• Upholding the teaching and curriculum development skills of active teachers and educators
Membership Levels:
Prospective Members (i.e., under consideration for membership) – faculty, fellows, PGY3+ residents, and non-physician healthcare professionals who have not yet met the requirement for formal induction into the BIDMC Academy:
• Participation in a minimum number of hours of BIDMC Academy-only activities or services within a single academic year. The requirements are 6 hours for faculty and 3 hours for PGY3+ trainees and other healthcare professionals.
Examples of BIDMC Academy activities (hours of credit in parentheses) include:
• BIDMC Academy Fall Retreat (3 hours)
• Monthly professional development sessions (1.0-1.5 hours)
• Peer observation of teaching or clinical skills (2 hours)
• 1-on-1 consultation (1 hour)
• CV clinic (1 hour)
• Leading any of the above (1-3 hours, depending on the activity)
Academy Members (i.e., membership in good standing) – faculty, fellows, PGY3+ residents, and other healthcare professionals who have met the annual requirement for continued membership:
• Participation in a minimum of 6 hours BIDMC- or HMS-associated professional development activities every academic year, of which 1 hour/year must be a BIDMC Academy activity.
HMS-associated professional development activities are defined as HMS, HMS-affiliate or
BIDMC activities. These include:
• Attending an HMS event, activity, or symposium
• Service on a BIDMC or HMS committee that has direct relevance to professional development (e.g., promotions committee)
• Leading or attending a BIDMC department-based professional development program
• Please note that all activities must be local with the purpose to enhance academic development. Not counted are CME courses, talks, or conferences directed at clinical topics, regional or national faculty development activities associated with academic
societies. In addition, every HMS faculty member is expected to participate in >50 hours of teaching per year; therefore, clinical teaching or mentoring of medical students, resident, fellows, or faculty does not count as BIDMC Academy credit.
• Existing members do not need to re-apply; membership is automatically renewed each year. If you have any questions about your membership (i.e., is it in good standing), please email Kelly Anastasio at kanasta2@bidmc.harvard.edu
