Artificial Intelligence: Prompts, Hallucinations and the Future of Medical Education

On April 28-30, The Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, in partnership with the Association of American Medical Colleges, hosted the Millennium Conference 2025. The conference examined the present and future uses of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine and the impact of this technology on medical education. The goal, ultimately, was to prepare medical educators to not only meet the challenges and maximize the potential of AI, but to harness the tool to increase efficiency of teaching and assessment and to identify those elements of a physician’s responsibilities that should not be delegated to the computer while ensuring that we prepare current medical students for an uncertain future of clinical practice.Over three days, we explored the opportunities and challenges of integrating artificial intelligence into undergraduate and graduate medical education.

Key themes included:
• Building AI literacy across all levels of training
• Using AI for personalized coaching, feedback, and safe “failure”
• Preparing faculty to assess and supervise AI-enhanced learning
• Preserving what’s essential: human connection, reasoning, and clinical judgment
Conversations were thoughtful, debate was lively, and one thing became clear:
AI is here—and must be taught with care, context, and intention.
Next steps will include developing a flexible, national curriculum to help educators guide the thoughtful use of AI in medical education.
