Updated: Mar 9, 2023

“We have been focused on a variety of programs to enhance faculty knowledge of the science of teaching and learning, offering a range of programs to meet the needs, desires, and time constraints of our faculty. For those who aspire to a career as a medical educator, we have developed additional programs to provide advanced skills in teaching and in the conduct of medical education research.“

- Richard M. Schwartzstein, MD

Executive Director

Dear friends, For the past two decades, a core mission of the Shapiro Institute for Education and Research is to support the development of “professional medical educators.” The premise is that merely graduating medical school or completing a residency does not confer expertise in teaching and educating necessary to produce the next generation of physicians. Consequently, we have been focused on a variety of programs to enhance faculty knowledge of the science of teaching and learning, offering a range of programs to meet the needs, desires, and time constraints of our faculty. For those who aspire to a career as a medical educator, we have developed additional programs to provide advanced skills in teaching and in the conduct of medical education research.

In the following pages you will hear from many of our staff who will discuss available programs focusing on career promotion and success for faculty at all career stages. Through these programs and the work of our staff, we will continue to provide guidance, mentorship, and practical support to colleagues seeking professional development at BIDMC. It is our hope that as a result of this work, our faculty is well positioned to successfully meet all of their career aspirations.
